Three, Two, ONE…..Happy New Year!
2016 seems to be going out in a blaze of glory, but nonetheless, in just a few days we will usher in the new year! I cannot believe how quickly time flies the older I get. Didn’t it seem like Christmas took forever to get here when we were little? Now I am like, “Wait! I need another couple days to prepare!” Next thing you know, it’s time to make your New Year’s Resolution.
I know that for our little family, this has been a year of big changes. It’s been real, 2016, but I am looking ahead now. To be honest, I have never really been one to make resolutions. People always ask me what my resolution is, and I offer up a canned response about being a better person or being healthier. It’s not that I think I don’t need one, (I need a whole freakin’ list!) but it is kind of overwhelming to pick the ONE most important thing to work on and pin it down. I typically just avoid it.
Well, not this year! After some introspection, I have created the EASIEST, yet most effective resolution, and I thought I should share it with you. I’ll give you a hint: I’ve already said it.
Another hint: it’s a number.
Guessed it yet? Ok here it is!
Drum roll please……………………..
ONE!
Stay with me here. My major problem with resolutions is that I have way more than one aspect of my life that I want to improve upon, and I get overwhelmed trying to determine what area is most important. Also, there is never a plan of action with resolutions. It’s just, “Okay, here is my resolution!” There is a reason that regular gym-goers joke about the “New Year’s Resolution-ers” that flood the gym every January through March. Everyone has great intentions, but little plan for follow through.
This is how I stumbled upon my new Resolution Algorithm: ONE!
Here’s how it works:
Each week, do ONE more thing:
- With your children (child): this means one more book, one more game, or just one more moment where you are giving them 100% of you, with no distractions.
- For your husband: this could be a chore he hates, cooking a favorite meal, or letting him hang with the guys. Once a week, do ONE thing just for him, no strings attached.
- For your health: This could be ONE extra fitness class, ONE new exercise, ONE super-healthy meal, or simply ONE period of time to disconnect and unwind.
ONE more thing with your kids, ONE more thing just for hubby, and ONE more thing just for you every week- that is pretty manageable!
(I am also tempted to add ONE less thing each week that puts more distance between you and whatever you love: family, job, etc, but I don’t want to go crazy here- it’s only my first resolution!)
ONE choice each week seems very doable for me, and here’s the coolest part: at the end of the year, you will have spent
52 extra moments with your kids
shown love and respect for your husband 52 times
and done 52 things just for yourself-to make you a better you!
If my resolution-phobic self can commit to this, then so can you! I am ready to start the new year with a plan, and I will keep you posted on my progress.
I don’t know about you, but I am looking forward to 2017! Happy New Year!
What are your resolutions this year? Do you think my ONE Resolution is will work for you?
